Why Cambridge buildings need fire damper testing
Cambridge concentrates two kinds of demanding damper work. The first is research and healthcare: the Cambridge Biomedical Campus around Addenbrooke's is one of the largest clusters of hospital and laboratory space in Europe, and the science parks that make up 'Silicon Fen' — Cambridge Science Park, Granta Park and Babraham among them — are full of laboratory, cleanroom and specialist ventilation, with fire dampers set in long, congested duct runs. The second is the historic collegiate and civic estate: listed college, library and museum buildings that have had mechanical ventilation retrofitted into fabric never designed for it, leaving dampers tucked into awkward risers and voids. Both demand the same discipline — every damper located and registered before it can be drop-tested on schedule.
How the testing works
Wherever the building is, the method is the same: we locate and register every fire damper, physically drop-test each one to confirm it closes, repair or replace any that fail, and issue full certification — in line with BS 9999:2017 and HTM 03-01, at intervals not exceeding 12 months. Can you work in occupied labs and college buildings?
Yes. Much of the Cambridge work is in live laboratories, healthcare and listed college buildings, where dampers can be hard to reach — we survey and register them first, then test around operational use.
