Overview
Premier Compliance delivered a comprehensive passive fire protection package across a 200-metre underground service tunnel and three multi-storey risers at Bangor Hospital — all while the hospital remained fully operational.
We surveyed the tunnel (which had no fire separation), assessed the risers floor by floor, and produced a complete asset register of every breach, fire door and fire damper, with an action plan and tender package for the works that followed.
Challenges
- Confined-space working in the tunnel — breathing apparatus, a winch system and a dedicated surface safety operative.
- High temperatures from hot-water pipes, requiring ventilation to keep the working environment safe.
- Manufacturer-specific firestopping for each fire damper, in line with individual test evidence.
- A fully operational hospital, demanding careful scheduling to avoid disruption.
What we did
- Built six 60-minute fire-rated compartment walls in the tunnel, with integrated fire doors.
- Replaced all riser doors with BM Trada-certified 60-minute fire doors, wired to the alarm.
- Firestopped over 450 penetrations and 50+ fire dampers to manufacturer test evidence.
- Delivered full certification and O&M documentation under the UKAS IFC-accredited scheme.
Outcome
A new benchmark for compliance on the estate — and a follow-on award to deliver the recommended firestopping, compartment walls and fire doors.
This was the first time a large-scale passive fire protection package had been executed with such attention to detail and comprehensive certification. As a result, the client has involved us in the earlier stages of upcoming projects.
